Ponte Vecchio and the area adjacent to it deserves special mention.
As we walked across Piazza Della Signoria and down past Galleria degli Uffizi, David said to me "Mum you are about to see one of the most beautiful things you'll ever see in your life" - and so it was!! - Ponte Vecchio - Florence's single most famous sight. It is one of many bridges that cross the Arno River but the fact that it has survived seven centuries and all those floods is a miracle. Even Hitler ordered that it should be spared in 1944!!
I didn't count the number of times we crossed soaking up the atmosphere, checking out the famous merchants in the shops either side of the bridge, admiring the river, marvelling at the crowds, the locks, the good espresso coffee at the cafe on the other side and looking up to the famous covered passageway that runs from the Uffizi to the Palazzo Pitti quite a bit further on, on the western side of the river and I'll tell you about the palace and gardens in my next blog.
